Theophilis Addison Michael Coyan (1821-aft. 1890)
"A first cousin to my 3rd great-grandfather, William Coyan"
According to family bible records sent to me by Rick Borland, Addison Coyan was born on September 3, 1821, the son of John Michael and Margaret McKinnon Coyan in Columbiana county, Ohio. On September 28, 1848, Addison married Mary Hoge in Jefferson county, Ohio. By 1850, they are shown in the U.S. census record for Carroll county, Ohio, with Addison Coin being age 28, and Mary shown as age 25. Addison's occupation is as a "cabinet maker". There are no children listed. However, after this 1850 census was taken, a daughter, Minerva, was born later that year. Recently, I also found a gravemarker for another daughter, Rebecca, who died in infancy and is buried in the Bethlehem cemetary in Carroll county, Ohio.
Addison purchased several parcels of land in Carroll county in 1855, but I need to get back to their courthouse to find out when he sold this land. By 1859, Addison and Mary Coyan had moved to Illinois and it was here that a son, John M. (I'd bet that stands for "Michael"), was born in November, 1859. At the time of the U.S. census in 1860, Addison, wife Mary, and their 2 surviving children had relocated to Bates county, Missouri. In 1867, Addison and Mary Coyan sold the land in Bates county that they had purchased in early 1861. At the time they sold this land, they had moved back to Illinois and were residing in the city of Quincy.
Recently, I discovered a U. S. census record for Addison Coyan in 1870 in Hannibal, Missouri, which is just across the state line from Quincy, Illinois. The record shows him to be living alone in a hotel there at age 48, with a listed occupation of "cabinet maker". It is my belief that sometime between early 1867 and June, 1870, Addison and his wife Mary Hoge Coyan had divorced. My reason for suspecting that is because their son John would have been only age 10 at the time of that census. Since he wasn't with his Dad, it is logical that his mother would be his caretaker - although if Mary had died, it is possible that John could have been living with his older sister Minerva since she would have been age 20 by 1870 and probably living in the Quincy, Illinois area. Perhaps records in Adams county, Illinois (which I am pursuing) will tell us more. On November 9, 1875, Minerva Coyan was married to Bernard Raver in Adams county, Illinois.
On July 13, 1876, Addison Coyan remarried to a Mrs. Catherine Barber, in Adams county, Illinois. The last record I am aware of for Addison shows "Theophilis Addison Coyan" present in Placer county, California as a registered voter in 1890 - very near to where a brother, George Coyan, would have been living at the time. Addison would have been nearly 70 years of age at that time. No record of his death has been found to date.
